Artist Statement
My passion for art and specifically watercolor has been an underlying thread which emerged from the curious tangles of life.  My husband Fred Swanson is an environmental writer who opened my life to breathtaking explorations of nature with each season. Through our travels, frequently focused on southern Utah, I am constantly awed by the geography of our protected lands.  The watercolor medium challenges me to express the freshness of color and light ranging from redrock to autumn leaves. And it is quite a challenge!
From the perspective of my Catholic faith I see nature as a gift to be enjoyed and protected, for now and for the future.  Besides iconic “calendar” scenes, I am also drawn to a more intimate relationship with the land, especially with its flowers and fauna.  They inspire me and remind me to appreciate nature’s treasures.
Biography/Resume
In real life I’ve been a physician.  Although that sounds like a focused direction, I always pursued my creative  side, like minoring in art in college.  So, perhaps not surprising that while practicing medicine I took up watercolor painting.  I am hardly self-taught however.  National watercolor workshops, weekly classes and the support of local artists and the community have helped me use water to show color and light.  I am active in the Utah Watercolor Society, through which I teach a sketching class.
I have won Honorable Mentions in both Art in the Parks and Paint America.  In northern Utah, solo exhibits of my work have been sponsored by Red Butte Gardens, Utah Art and Environment Collaborative, Jewish Community Center and Eccles Community Art Center galleries.  My paintings have have won awards in local show competitions and have been featured in environmental publications here in Utah. Dancing Cranes Imports, 673 Simpson Avenue, Salt Lake City and ##tomplummergallery.com (on line) represents my work.
