I just finished this small painting 4 X 3", the canyon wren is a small bird after all. To me it's a poetic symbol of southern Utah canyons. They flit so quickly, a flash of movement is all, usually in a shady riparian area surrounded by red rock walls. I've never really seen it very clearly.  But the call of the canyon wren is loud and distinctive. Sibley's bird guide describes it as a cascading series of clear whistles, falling and slowing.  It's a thrill to hear! For those who recognize the call of the canyon wren, it's a delightful "welcome back" to the redrock country.
