Capitol Reef Plein Aire 2019 Arts in the Parks 2019 happened last week in Capitol Reef National Park, Utah. It was a four day plein aire event where artists paint outdoors at a site of their own choosing. The weather was exceptionally fine. Who can resist sitting in a deserted desert canyon surrounded by red rock walls and listening to birdsong? Not only birds, I had accidental encounters with a buck deer and a mountain sheep and her lamb.
So I've posted my process, starting with the value sketch on the left, using light and dark values to work out the composition. Next comes a quick sketchbook version of what I hope the final painting might look like. This is an opportunity to work out problems before the actual painting. The image on the right is the final painting which I matted and framed for exhibition at an entertaining art event for the public. Do I always use this process? Almost never, I'm too anxious to get painting! But I should, my paintings would benefit. There's always an occasion to learn.
